Combo Microwave Ovens – Are They Worth the Extra Cost?
The major benefit to owning a combi microwave oven over a standard microwave is that by combining your microwave and your convection oven in one system you are eliminating the need for having both. Old-fashioned ovens are most often the largest single unit you have in your kitchen, which means that by taking away the requirement for an oven you will probably gain a lot of space. This could be helpful if for instance you were thinking of having a dishwashing machine but had no room to put it. Or, you may live in a flat where there simply is no room for an oven, but you might be able to find counter-top space for a combined microwave oven. You might think that a microwave oven could never be a substitute for a standard convection oven, but some of the higher-end models even have an integrated grilling function.
Additional Capacity for Cooking
Even if you do not have a space issue and you’re genuinely attached to your oven there are other very good reasons that you might still give some thought to purchasing a combined microwave oven. Another main reason why it may be beneficial for you is if you have a large family or regularly cook for a large number of people then it might provide you with more ability. If you make a full Sunday roast once a week there’s every chance that by the time you have put the joint in the oven you do not have room to get anything else in there such as a tray of potatoes. If you also had a microwave which was capable of cooking these vegetables like a regular oven then you would not have to sacrifice them because of not enough room.
A Great Time Saver
A further plus point which many people might possibly not be aware of is that a combination microwave oven can in fact function as a great time-saving device. Some models actually let you choose to microwave heat food while using classic convection heating simultaneously. As the food is being heated in two different ways this will actually let it cook more quickly but without risk of burning. So if you’re one of these people who finds that large amounts of your time are eaten up in waiting for things to cook, a combined microwave oven may be just what you need.
Expense
When all is said and done, combined microwave ovens usually are more expensive to buy than an ordinary microwave and so they are not for everyone. If you recognise any of the problems that I have discussed here though then it’s fairly probable that you would benefit by investing that little bit more in a combined microwave oven rather than an ordinary cooker.
